John 5:30 – March 17, 2021

I cannot do anything on my own; I judge as I hear, and my judgment is just, because I do not seek my own will but the will of the one who sent me. John 5:30 NABRE

Jesus has been accused of violating the Sabbath by healing a man and He is accused of blaspheming by claiming to be God’s Son. The authorities are accusing Jesus and Jesus responds with a discourse defending His words and deeds on the basis of His identity as the Son. Jesus explains that His healing of the paralyzed man on the Sabbath is a sign He possess unique divine powers to give life and judge. Both of these are powers God exercises on the Sabbath and therefore Jesus is following the example of his Father on the Sabbath. Jesus in the conclusion of the discourse says, He cannot do anything on His own because He does not seek His own will but the will of the Father who sent Him. Jesus is God’s messenger, but more than a messenger He is the Son of God who represents His Father and has all the authority and trust of the Father. Jesus has been given this trust by the Father because Jesus lives to do the Father’s will, He lives to teach us about the Father and that our life should be about doing the Father’s will. Father knows best and it is best for all if we live to do the Father’s will.

Jesus was certain of the Father’s will and I think we can be as certain if we really think about what it is God wants for humanity. God’s view of the world is not complicated, He is a Father who wants His children to love, to care for one another and to help one another. Jesus is accused of breaking the law by doing something good. Jesus eventually accepts the judgement of the “law” and in that moment doesn’t sway from His mission to make life easier for Himself.

Can you determine God’s will for your life? Are you willing to do God’s will despite any personal hardship?
