Ezekiel is prophesizing during a time when the temple and Jerusalem have been destroyed by the Babylonians. Gone is the natural pride and false reliance on the temple; what is needed in this moment is to build up confidence in God, who has always been ready the help Israel. Ezekiel has a message of steadfast love from God which becomes a great help and provides the inspiration for the people to keep their eyes fixed on the goodness of God, which is always greater than all the sins they (or we) can commit. God does not remind us of our failures and ingratitude when we are transformed with a desire to know God deeply nor does God dwell on mercies we have already received. The prophet is responsible in this period after the fall of Jerusalem to be the watchmen for the people, he is charged with warning people about the dangers that threaten Israel. Ezekiel will hear from God and must bring the message of warning to the people. God is making him responsible to provide warning and encouragement to the people. In our current time we should be a watchmen for each other. As followers of Christ we should always be sure to provide aid to a brother or sister who is missing an important sign or is in danger of committing a grievous sin. We do this because of our love for one another, which is manifest through our actions. If we love one another then we will provide help to each other, which will keep our relationship with Christ righteous.
We are Christian because of our love, which means we act on behalf of one another. We are brothers and sisters in Christ for a reason, watching out for one another is a major reason.
