Ephesians 3:19 – June 6, 2020

and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Ephesians 3:19 NABRE

Paul is ending his letter to the community at Ephesus and he does so by praying for the people of the community. It reminds us of Jesus farewell discourse to His disciples in John’s gospel and when He has told them all He wants them to know He looks to the heavens and prays for them. Paul has specific requests of God for those reading or hearing his words. He wants them to be strengthened, he prays that the risen Christ may dwell in their hearts, he prays that they may comprehend something with all the holy ones (a united hope) and finally he prays that they may know the love of Christ which surpasses all knowledge. Paul is praying in this last prayer that the listener may have a personal experience and knowledge of Christ, particularly of the love of Christ. Paul hopes they will receive the gift of love that withholds nothing and seeks only the good of the other. Paul is in awe of the love of Christ who gave everything for others, giving even His own life for the life of others, those He knew and those He will know at a later time. It is this love of Christ and gift of love that gives Paul all hope for the future. With hope in his heart Paul prays for those who hear his words; so they too may know this love and be people who give this love to others, just as Christ has done for us all.

Paul finishes by indicating that the listener be filled with the fullness of God. As if we are empty vessels that can be filled with God’s divine life and love measured out of God’s fullness. Paul wants the listener to be infinitely filled with God. It is a beautiful prayer.

Are you ready to be filled with God?  Do you love as Christ loves?

With hope in his heart Paul prays for those who hear his words; so they too may know this love and be people who give this love to others, just as Christ has done for us all. Click To Tweet
