Psalms 87:3 – May 5, 2020

Glorious things are said of you, O city of God! Psalms 87:3 NABRE

Korah a rich man who felt he had been wronged denied the sovereignty and superior sanctity of Moses, Aaron and the other leaders of Israel. He protested that the entire congregation is holy. Gathering with two-hundred and fifty Israelites, holding an assembly against Moses and Aaron, he said, “You go too far! The whole community, all of them, are holy; the LORD is in their midst. Why then should you set yourselves over the LORD’s assembly?” (Numbers 16:3) He also refused to recognize the land of Israel holier than any other land. At this point Korah’s sons refused to join his revolt, instead they composed a song to extol the unique virtues of the land of Israel and the city of Jerusalem. They gave credence to the idea just as some locations are better suited to the service of God than others, so too are certain men such as Moses, better suited as spiritual leaders. The sons of Korah describe the city in beautiful terms, “Great is the LORD and highly praised in the city of our God: His holy mountain, fairest of heights, the joy of all the earth,” (Psalms 48:2-3.) They denote a physical beauty to the city, a holy place, and a climate that is perfect in a city of spiritual excellence. For the Hebrew people God’s name was never spoken explicitly except in the Temple. Thus Jerusalem alone deserves the title city of God. This psalm recognizes the significance and beauty of a city where God dwells.

Going forward this significance is carried in the church, it is the church where God dwells and the beauty of the church is extolled throughout the world. It became a union of God the Father and Church as mother carrying along the children of God in spiritual excellence and love.

Do you see glory in the church? Is the church a place the sends forth God for you?

It is the church where God dwells becoming a union of God the Father and Church as mother carrying along the children of God in spiritual excellence and love. Click To Tweet
