John 8:31-32 – November 4, 2019

Jesus then said to those Jews who believed in him, “If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32 NABRE

Jesus is inviting new believers, those without much depth of experience to grow in their belief and thinking to an understanding closer to what Jesus understands. He teaches that by receiving the truth He reveals, true freedom is received. His listeners have a hard time understanding. John begins by explaining Jesus is speaking to Jews who believe in him. But by saying they believe we should understand they are certain religious leaders who have newly come to Jesus and still don’t understand all, plus their faith is not complete. Jesus’ teaching continues and we understand that true disciples receive Jesus’ word, embrace it, and allow it to transform their lives. Those who do so will know the truth. To receive Jesus word is to know the truth because Jesus as God’s Word, is Himself the truth.  Those who receive the truth revealed by Jesus and let it take root, growing in them, will be set free. Freedom is explained in a later verse where Jesus talks about sin; those who commit sin are slaves to sin. Sin separates us from God and the state of sin is slavery because we are unable to free ourselves and reconcile with God. Jesus is the one who frees all people from the slavery of sin and thus, Jesus the Truth sets us free.

We all want to be free. Freedom allows us to make choices in our life without dependency or addiction, it means we are not slaves to anything, nothing from the outside controls us. To be free is to allow the Truth to lead us. Being led by Truth means we will live our best life and with the Truth live life better.

Do you seek freedom as an ultimate principle of life? Do you spend time in prayer to have the Truth revealed?

Freedom allows us to make choices in our life without dependency or addiction, it means we are not slaves to anything, nothing from the outside controls us. To be free is to allow the Truth to lead us. Click To Tweet
