Colossians 2:6-7 – March 11, 2019

So, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, walk in him, rooted in him and built upon him and established in the faith as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. Colossians 2:6-7 NABRE

Paul writing to the Christian community in Colossae is concerned about a new vision, what he calls a philosophy that might take hold in the community. He writes to remind them of their Baptism in Christ. They have received Jesus, which they cannot forget and so Paul tells them to “walk in Him.” The community must move forward with Jesus. They don’t need a new way of life other than Jesus who is their best way of life. Everything they know in life comes from Jesus, no other philosophy or way of life is necessary, in fact some way to live other than Jesus can take away freedom. Jesus supports their freedom. To walk with Jesus means to act like, behave like or more generally live in Jesus. To live in a manner worthy of the Lord. Paul tells them to walk with Jesus and remain rooted. In other words, never let themselves be unconnected from Jesus. Like a plant sources of nutrients, water, comes through the root, rooted in Jesus their source of life is provided. It is similar to Jesus telling us He is the vine and we are the branches. (John 15:5) When we stay connected, or rooted to Jesus, everything goes the way God intends, our life is best and we have the best influence possible on those whose lives we touch. So to remain rooted even as you walk the way of Christ is to continually draw life and strength from Him, overflowing with thanksgiving to God who sent us Jesus for life.

Baptized Christians are reminded we discover Jesus within. Jesus is our partner, simply call on Him. Take time to slow down, be quiet with Jesus, put away distractions, listen to your heart, Jesus is rooted in you.

Do you slow down each day? Do you call on Jesus for help?
