Proverbs 5:21 – December 9, 2018

Indeed, the ways of each person are plain to the LORD’s sight; all their paths he surveys; Proverbs 5:21 NABRE

Proverbs opens with ten lessons, each a full chapter. The fifth lesson is about remaining faithful and not falling for sexual sin or false teachers. The quoted verse speaks of God as seeing everything, knowing our every thought, word and deed. God is always with us, seeing. Sexual sins are done in secret. Adulterers meet in private, pornography addicts hide and make excuses to be alone. Even lusting in your heart cannot be secret from God. So while these sins may be kept secret from other people, God knows all. The proverb contrast sinfulness with the beauty of a committed partner. You are blessed if you are with the one you met when you were young. Rejoice in their affection, let them fill you with delight, live to please one another and lift each other high. You might be tempted to try new and different partners or activities, but there is nothing more amazing and beautiful than a partnership of love and mutuality. The proverb speaks about discipline and prayer, no one is perfect and you may see imperfection in one another, but those are just opportunities to help each other. Live for the one you love, and in that love you create the image of God.

An undisciplined life can lead to many distractions. Technology has made us more connected and more alone. We are tempted to use this loneliness to seek out pleasure rather than fulfillment. Pleasure is fleeting, once over you seek more. The immediate always leads to sinful things, like pleasure for fulfillment, or images for intimacy, experience for exclusivity. Sin undermines happiness. So be aware, have discipline, if you can’t then be aware God sees all.

Do you aspire to fulfillment or pleasure? Are you disciplined enough to avoid temptation?
