Proverbs 18:24 – October 9, 2018

There are friends who bring ruin, but there are true friends more loyal than a brother. Proverbs 18:24 NABRE

This proverb from Solomon although written many years ago is as valid today as it was when written. We all have friends, some of us have friends that lead us astray. Maybe a friend who likes to party, or is looking for an easy get rich quick scheme, or maybe a friend who doesn’t have the same foundation in a gospel life that we have. We are going to make lots of friends in life, not all of them great. We should be careful. Leadership training courses teach that we should make friends with those who can lead us to become better leaders. We should surround ourselves with people who will challenge us, and help us grow. We hear it in sports, play against a better tennis player, or basketball player, or baseball player, if we want to improve. It is not to say we should choose friends only based on how they could help us. But, we should know not all friends will have our best interest at heart. However we can find friends that are better than a brother or a sister. Here the proverb is speaking about loyalty, a friend that will be interested in our best as much as we are. This could include telling us hard truths when we need them. A true friend will risk our friendship to be sure we are doing our best.

When it comes to being a friend, how do we stack up? Are we loyal and like a brother or sister with our friends. When they are veering off a righteous path are we ready to step in and help them get back on track? Do we challenge our friends to be the best? Do we want our friends best more than we want to be there friend? A loyal friend is like a blood relation, be sure you earn this title.

What kinds of friends are in your inner circle? What kind of friend are you?

A true friend will risk our friendship to be sure we are doing our best. Click To Tweet
