2 Corinthians 5:20 – January 13, 2020

So we are ambassadors for Christ, as if God were appealing through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 2 Corinthians 5:20 NABRE

Paul claiming he is an ambassador for Christ, as well as those who read his letter to the community at Corinth. An ambassador represents the person or nation that commissioned them. Jesus came to represent God and now Paul is representing God, appealing to those in the community, those who are reading this letter, those of us who hear this letter at some point years after it was written. God has been appealing to us since the beginning of humanity. The creator appealing to the creation. It is a love story, God loves us and wants us to know He is open to our love in return. Paul goes on to say he implores us on behalf of Christ, who appeals to us on behalf of God. It is God’s word, not mere human words that Paul proclaims when he implores. The heart of the message is to be reconciled to God. No matter what we think our relationship is with God, God wants our relationship to be secure, to be a good relationship, and that we live in harmony with God. This does not mean we do whatever we want, in fact it is more likely we sacrifice our personal preferences so that we can contribute to the common good. God wants harmony with all, which is not possible if we work to please ourselves alone. Therefore we need to be in harmony with one another if we expect to be reconciled with God.

God knows doing for others is more joyful, leads to a better life individually and makes life better for all humanity. Paul appealing for Jesus who appeals for God, implores us to live with this kind of reconciliation.

Can you live reconciled to God when it means sacrificing your desires to live in harmony with your neighbor? Do you recognize God trying to implore you?
