Revelation 7:9 – December 12, 2019

After this I had a vision of a great multitude, which no one could count, from every nation, race, people, and tongue. They stood before the throne and before the Lamb, wearing white robes and holding palm branches in their hands. Revelation 7:9 NABRE

Revelation is the last book of the scriptures, credited to John and it is about the last judgement and the end of time. The section with the quoted verse is a vision of the triumph of the people after working through the tribulations of life. It is a preview of what awaits God’s people on the other side of the great tribulation of this life. God shelters His people in His presence while the Lamb shepherds them and leads them to springs of life-giving water. It is our earliest and most beautiful picture of the life in heaven that awaits faithful believers. John sees a great multitude, which has to be remarkable since at the time of his vision the number of people who are following Jesus is very small. Yet John sees a great multitude from every nation, race, people and tongue. This indicates the universal characteristic of God’s people, anticipating God’s promise to Abraham “you are to become the father of a multitude of nations.” (Genesis 17:4) They are standing before the throne, wearing white with palm branches, the signs for victory, joy and resurrection. White robes were given to the martyrs and palm branches were used to celebrate the fall festival where the people recalled God’s protection in the wilderness and a foreshadowing of His protection into the future.

The vision in Revelation not only underlines the difficulties that Christians will have, including suffering and death, but it points out in the end the victory belongs to Christ and we all celebrate with God.
