Deuteronomy 18:15 – December 10, 2019

A prophet like me will the LORD, your God, raise up for you from among your own kindred; that is the one to whom you shall listen. Deuteronomy 18:15 NABRE

Deuteronomy is a book of historical accounts, long discourses, exhortations and a second body of laws similar to those in Exodus and in Leviticus.  Moses is seen as the author, in fact Moses is said to be responsible for the first five books commonly known as the Pentateuch. Deuteronomy recounts the main events at the end of the forty years the Israelites spent wandering in the desert under the leadership of Moses. The people are about to embark on the conquest of the land the Lord is going to give them. Moses addresses then in a farewell address which contains his last will and testament including telling them the rule of behavior they should keep. In his address Moses gives a number of speeches, telling of the law and some blessings. In the verse quoted Moses announces that there will be a prophet like him that will be raised up from among the people and they should listen to him. Moses is a great prophet and leader for the Israelites. He is seen as their great savior, bringing them out of slavery in Egypt. As the Hebrew Scriptures foreshadows the new covenant many see this prophet fulfilled in Jesus Christ, a new type of Moses and a new type of savior for the people. Paul actually identifies the “prophet” who will be raised up as being Jesus Christ, quoting this verse. (see Acts 3:22-23)

Of course Moses could be speaking about any number of prophets that God depended upon over the course of the history of the people. But, this prophet could reach his fullest expression in Jesus Christ, the greatest of all prophets. So we should listen to him!

Do you see God in history? Do you understand God’s time is not our time?

Moses announces a coming prophet, it could be any prophet in history but, this prophet could reach his fullest expression in Jesus Christ, the greatest of all prophets. So we should listen to him! Click To Tweet
