2 Peter 3:10-11 – November 30, 2019

But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a mighty roar and the elements will be dissolved by fire, and the earth and everything done on it will be found out. Since everything is to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought [you] to be, conducting yourselves in holiness and devotion, 2 Peter 3:10-11 NABRE

Peter is closing out his second letter to several communities. He is speaking about the end times. The heavens will pass away, he is likely talking about the stars and sun in the sky but not so much a disappearing as a transformation, they will be new. Peter says, the earth and everything done on it will be found out, this assumes all will be known, everything done will be revealed and the Lord will come in judgement. When? We don’t know as it comes like a thief in the night. God is not delaying but simply giving all time and space to turn to Him and repent, which is His purpose since the beginning of the world. Peter continues asking; since everything is dissolved; all has changed and the time of judgement is coming; what sort of person should we be? He answers his own question by saying we should be holy and devoted to God. In other words, since the present world will be dissolved and all works and deeds fully scrutinized by God, it makes sense to lead lives that follow the way marked by Jesus.

Jesus taught how to live. One reason to live like Jesus is because Jesus makes life better and makes us better at life. Well, if that is not a good enough reason for you to live like Jesus Peter explains you should do it because everything will dissolve in time and your life will be looked at in judgement by God who will reward you or it will lead to your own destruction.

Are you living a holy and devoted life? Can you withstand the scrutiny of judgement?

Since the present world will be dissolved and all works and deeds fully scrutinized by God, it makes sense to lead lives that follow the way marked by Jesus. Click To Tweet
