John 15:16 – October 18, 2019

It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you. John 15:16 NABRE

Jesus’ public life is all about the work, the ministry He lives and shares with those He encounters. Sure He went to weddings, had meals at people’s homes, traveled from His home to Jerusalem for the all the Jewish feasts and festivals, but these were always the backdrop for what He came to accomplish. He wanted people to know God and to trust the Father wants them to know they are loved. Jesus is nearing the end of life, moving closer to His death and passing on instructions to His guys, the team He picked to continue His work. He tells them, you may think you came to me on your own but I picked you, you are the guys I wanted and I am counting on you to move the work along. Their lives must become about the work, the ministry; go and bear fruit that will remain. They are to select others who will continue the message, they are to spread the seed of the gospel so it plants in the hearts of others and continues to grow, bearing fruit. As the word spreads, and the fruit blossoms Jesus tells them that they can ask the Father for anything and it will be given to them. He is not saying they can ask for the winning lottery number, He is telling them they can ask God’s help in continuing the ministry, bearing more fruit and the Father helps, making sure they have what is needed.

Jesus has chosen us, and He wants us to bear fruit. What we ask of the Father will be given to us. Our life should be primarily about doing the work of Jesus. As we go about our daily activities we should always seek ways to live Jesus’ message, always seeking the chance to bear fruit.

Do you see yourself as a disciple? Do you constantly look for opportunities to bear fruit?

Jesus has chosen us, and He wants us to bear fruit. What we ask of the Father will be given to us. Our life should be primarily about doing the work of Jesus. Click To Tweet
