Matthew 5:9 – September 23, 2019

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Matthew 5:9 NABRE

The quoted verse is taken from the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus’ teaching about how to live a better life. He provides eight beatitudes or blessings that identify underlying attitudes and characteristics of a true disciple and commends those who take this path of discipleship as truly happy. He speaks blessed are the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, the merciful, the clean of heart, the persecuted for righteousness and peacemakers. Peacemakers are not those who avoid hostility but rather live a life of well-being and correctly ordered relationships. Peacemakers strive to bring harmony with God and others in society. They unite the estranged one and another and reconcile enemies, particularly anyone who might be their own enemy. Peacemakers share in the Father’s mission of restoring the world to right relationship with God. If you are a peacemaker you will be called a child of God. An intimate relationship with God, possible for all disciples of Jesus. Peace is above all an interior movement. A person who radiates peace can be like a spiritual presence of Jesus Himself. Peace is an attitude that starts with love and continues on to forgiveness. Both liberate us and make us the presence Jesus wants in the world for peace. It is one of the last wishes of Jesus, He tells us, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.” (John 14:27)

We may not live in a peaceful situation or without violence in our life, but if we have an inner attitude of love and forgiveness than we can hold onto that peace Jesus leaves for us and gives us. Forgiveness is the best way to show love, it is the way that we can most easily and most reliably be a peacemaker.

Do you forgive readily? Are you able to remain peaceful in violent situations?
