Matthew 25:40 – September 7, 2019

And the king will say to them in reply, “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25:40 NABRE

Matthew is sharing Jesus’ teaching about judgement at the return of the Son of Man. The scene is a king on his throne, accompanied by angels and all nations are gathered in front of him. Those gathered will be separated as a shepherd separates the goats and sheep. Those on the right will inherit the kingdom prepared. Then he explains why; those on the right fed, gave drink, clothed, cared for and visited the king. Not remembering they asked when they did these things. The king tells them, “whatever you did for one of these least of mine, you did it for me.” Jesus sees Himself in the poor and needy and when we help them we are helping Jesus. When we help the poor and needy we are acting as disciples of Jesus and we will receive the kingdom prepared for us at the foundation of the world. Jesus came so that all could have a full life, He counts on us to provide for those who do not have or cannot provide for themselves.

Almost a third of the world population claims to be a follower of Jesus, and yet some statistics indicate that almost half the world’s population lives in poverty, many on less than $2.50 a day. Jesus would want us to reach out to these poor and help them with what they need. It is a challenge, but if we live as though we are rich now than what reward can God provide for us in the future? When we see someone in need we should first see them as a child of God, our brother, our sister, the true image of Jesus. If we accept this truth we would be anxious to help. As there is still so much poverty we disciples likely need to live this truth more deeply.

Do you meet the poor in your daily life? Do you help the poor, sharing what you have or giving from your excess?

Jesus came so that all could have a full life, He counts on us to provide for those who do not have or cannot provide for themselves. Click To Tweet
