Proverbs 18:2 – September 3, 2019

Fools take no delight in understanding, but only in displaying what they think. Proverbs 18:2 NABRE

In this section of Proverbs we can see many proverbs having to do with good speech. Wisdom teachers valued reserved and careful consideration in speech. These teachers had a serious purpose in mind, to steer the student around pitfalls and through the most difficult area of human speech and conduct; namely, to avoid the impulse to speak the first that pops into their mind. This chapter of Proverbs discusses a number of categories concerning sinful or foolish speech; quarreling, scorn spoken out of contempt, creating strife, gossip, speaking without thinking, and the one we have quoted above; vain and empty self-opinion. The proverb addresses fools who want to put on a show as if they are smart and know much, but in fact don’t understand what they are talking about and don’t care that they don’t understand. It seems to be self defining, if you have no understanding of what you are thinking and speak anyway, then you are foolish and fools will speak without thinking. These proverbs about speaking support the idea that a Christian is a witness, in other words it is the action of a Christian that should be observed. How a Christian lives, loves, and shares tells everything there is to know about Jesus Christ and their following Jesus path.

Christians should live in such a way that their life imitates the message of Jesus. But our words should be thoughtful and well considered. We can reach people with positive loving words and we should. Even if we are not in a position to speak about Jesus, we should always be encouraging, with truthful, positive affirmation.

How do you greet a stranger? How do you affirm and encourage those around you?

Christians should live in such a way that their life imitates the message of Jesus. But our words should be thoughtful and well considered. Click To Tweet
