Jesus speaks to His disciples about love. Love is the core motivation behind all Jesus does for us and for His Father. It is also the core of his being. The same is true of the Father, God is love and every act that comes from Him is an act of love. Jesus says, “The Father loves me, so also I love you, remain in my love.” This is not some emotional, feel good kind of love that Jesus is talking about, it is a love that leads to action. The action Jesus initiates is to make everything about Himself acts of the love He has for others. Jesus is the Christ who should enjoy a reign as King of the Universe, adored, honored and praised because of office. Rather Jesus volunteers to live as a human so that He may know what it is like to be us. We cannot know how much of Jesus divinity He was aware of while in His humanity, but He lived the message of love as He believed and believes we all should live as well. Jesus’ entire public life as we have seen is a gift to all those around Him and all who would come to know Him. We are called to do the same. We are to give our life for others. Jesus lived in such a way that it was inevitable that He would be killed. The world has difficulty receiving God or His Son who only love and do whatever it takes to give love to everyone. We have trouble accepting it ourselves. Jesus would have seen this coming and regardless of what he knew about God’s plan for salvation, He walked lovingly toward a murderous end because He loved.
We may not die for others, but we should give our life so that others lives are improved. This is the love required of a disciple of Christ.
