Proverbs 16:24 – July 26, 2019

Pleasing words are a honeycomb, sweet to the taste and invigorating to the bones. Proverbs 16:24 NABRE

Today we read a Proverb that should be obvious, saying something pleasing to another person will make you both happy. This should be the mantra for all Christians, we should be raising each other up, looking for the good in each other and encouraging each other as Christians. Jesus’ example is to give life for others. The message of Christianity is to put others first. We don't do this very well as a whole. Individually we might serve one another or help one another, but it would be difficult to say that all of Christianity put others first and themselves second. We are asked to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, heal the ill, visit the imprisoned and while there are some that do, the entire Christian family would have a hard time proving that is what we all do. Even when it comes to forgiveness, Jesus teaches we are to forgive one another as the Father forgives us; which is unconditionally, undeservedly and unlimitedly. However this is another area where we might be having trouble with our conviction. We somehow think forgiving someone who doesn’t deserve it is weakness. But we are forgiven and undeserving. So, maybe we can start by saying positive things to one another, exclusively. To look for the compliment about the other. To seek out the growth in the other. We can easily find something nice to say about others all the time. This might be the start of a true Christian movement, where people see who we are and want to be like us.

Take some time in prayer and see how you can change your message to family and friends from pointing out their faults to finding their strengths. Say something nice to someone every day, see how sweet that taste and invigorating.

Can you find something nice to say about others every time you see them? Would you like to hear something nice about yourself more often?
