Psalms 1:1-2 – July 17, 2019

Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the way of sinners, nor sit in company with scoffers. Rather, the law of the LORD is his joy; and on his law he meditates day and night. Psalms 1:1-2 NABRE

This first psalm is a preface to the entire book of psalms. The author says anyone who does not follow a path of wickedness, evil, they will be blessed. If they avoid sin, any separation from God, if they avoid people who would be bad company, they too are blessed. The blessed find joy in following the Lord, they desire to keep his commands, and seek closeness to God. Being blessed brings them happiness. They also seek to know as much about God as possible and so mediate and pray as often as possible. The blessed person will behave in such a way they honor God and others see them and want to know what makes them so attractive. The blessed person by their life attract others to God. To be blessed is to be intensely happy. To be blessed is available to all, there is no need for prestige, power, notoriety, no special place in the world is required. The blessed can be poor, forgotten, the least by worldly standards. In the eyes of God all are very special and have the possibility of being blessed.

We must become the blessed person, to be intensely happy and an example to others. To be blessed we must avoid sin, bad company and learn all we can about God.

Do you avoid temptation and bad company? Would you like to be blessed?
