Philippians 4:7 – June 30, 2019

Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7 NABRE

Paul writes to bring to light that the Christian is a joyful person. He exhorts us to rejoice in the Lord always. Paul seems so excited he repeats, rejoice! Christian kindness should be known to all. We know the Lord is near, we only need to seek Him. Paul goes on to tell us to have no anxiety at all, to have no worries about anything. Of course someone who is anxious would respond, “easier said than done.” But Paul is not speaking in imagery, he means it, asking God and trusting God to respond to our trouble and to provide for our needs. He advises to address anxiety, “in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God.” In everything means in all circumstances; illness, debt, relationship difficulties, adversaries, loneliness, whatever may be bringing the anxiety, God is a helper that can bring aid. Then Paul writes the quoted verse, God brings peace that surpasses all understanding. Continuing, God will guard our hearts and minds in Jesus. Jesus has come to create the Kingdom of God. We don’t suppress anxiety by trying to empty our minds of it, rather by seeking the Kingdom of God. Joining a community of believers and trusting God is the path to peace. It is the way to remove anxiety completely. We are not meant to be alone, so being in a community of love is the means to worry free living.

If you are not part of a Christian community think about joining one. To be surrounded by followers of Jesus, with the message to love God and love others will give you a chance to find support and learn to trust. You can find God’s peace in the right environment.
