Galatians 2:20 – May 12, 2019

yet I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me; insofar as I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God who has loved me and given himself up for me. Galatians 2:20 NABRE

In this verse Paul has a rich statement about life in Christ. In the immediate verse previous Paul spoke of the law, saying he dies to the law. Paul opens up to allow Christ to dwell in him (and it should be the same for us.) So when Christ dies, Paul dies, and the law has no more power of them. Death is the means to new life in Christ. We must die to ourselves, to be risen up in Christ. Paul has faith he has died with Christ, and now lives with Christ, within him. Paul knows his flesh, what is exposed to temptation, suffering and death is still with him, but living by faith in the Son of God allows Paul to welcome Christ within Him. Christ makes His divine life available to all and Paul responds in faith allowing Christ to indwell in him. Paul says this is what Christ intended when he was crucified, giving Himself up, choosing to die for us, who He loves. If we have faith we can become a new creation, our old life dies and our new life in Christ begins. It is belief and acceptance of Jesus that initiates this indwelling. It is God’s plan to make everything new, as God entered humanity, God enters humans to give us new life from within.

This is hard to understand. But it is the message of God in all things, new life comes from death. We see it in the seasons, plants, and many other natural phenomenon. For us we become new through the death of Jesus, choosing to die with Him, and letting Christ live in us.

Have you become faithful, accepting Jesus completely? Are you open to Jesus divine life indwelling in you?
