Colossians 3:17 – April 17, 2019

And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:17 NABRE

Paul writing to the community in Colossae warns them about life practices advice they are hearing in the form of a philosophy that is unnecessary. The people were being influenced to eat certain foods on special festivals, to worship certain powers and principalities and to pay attention to the moon for rituals. Paul writes Christ is all they need, participation in the Body of Christ. In chapter three of the letter Paul stresses the message they have died with Christ and are raised with Christ. Their past lives are gone and lives with special rituals to appease angels are unnecessary. They are in Christ and have already begun to share in the divine life. Their life is a preparation for when they will rise in the fullness of glory. Paul tells them to let the word of Christ dwell in them richly and to sing praises to God. Whatever they do in word or deed should be done in the name of Jesus with thanks. The community at Colossae has a purpose to live a new life given them when they became members of the Body of Christ. Their old lives are no more. Dedicating life to Christ means doing everything in the name of Christ.

We receive the same message today, all we need is Christ. Whatever we do in our day; our job, raising our family, praying, eating, having fun or working on a hobby, it is all good, but to ensure we remain connected to the vine, we should do it all in the name of Christ. Our purpose is bigger than ourselves, but at the same time we need to live paying attention to detail. So by doing all in the name of Christ we remain connected to God and we take care of our purpose.

Do you let Christ lead you? Do you do all in the name of Christ?

Whatever we do in our day; our job, raising our family, praying, eating, having fun or working on a hobby, it is all good, but to ensure we remain connected to the vine, we should do it all in the name of Christ. Click To Tweet
