Matthew 20:28 – March 26, 2019

Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as ransom for many. Matthew 20:28 NABRE

Jesus entire mission is to serve others rather than to be served by them. He lives His life for the benefit of other people. Jesus promises to give His life for the many other people of the world. He uses the phrase ransom his life. Ransom is used to express a sum of money paid for the release of property or people, in a biblical times. For example if a person is forced to sell them self into slavery, someone from their family could pay a ransom to obtain their freedom. Or if property is sold to pay a debt, someone could pay a ransom to retrieve the property. Jesus is not trying to return people or property physically; Jesus is giving his own life to ransom people from their sins. Jesus’ lives so everything He does is for someone else; He only does the will of the Father or He serves for others to have life. Jesus using the word servant means a slave, He gives up His life to serve others. It is sad to note that in the church today we see people trying to achieve celebrity or power. They want to be the authority of the congregation, make the decisions for the local church. It is rare to see leaders taking a towel and a basin to wash the feet of others, particular others who can offer nothing in return. There are many leaders who guard against this type of power, but there are church structures that put all the authority on one Pastor with no means of challenge. This is not Jesus way.

Greatness is not found in a position of power, but in how we serve one another. We must identify with Jesus in service and suffering. His path to greatness should be the path we follow, serving and suffering.

Do you have a servant leader in your church? Do you model service for others?
