Psalms 130:5 – February 11, 2019

I wait for the LORD, my soul waits and I hope for his word. Psalms 130:5 NABRE

Psalm 130 is seeking the forgiveness of the Lord, proclaiming God is so good and ever forgiving in steadfast love. The psalmist has hope in divine forgiveness which is fulfilled in the coming of Jesus. Jesus will redeem all God’s people. The psalm opens with a plea from deep in the heart or human consciousness, asking with complete humility, knowing the LORD is listening. The palmist admits every human is a sinner and God by forgiving shows greatness. God promised forgiveness and so we wait for it, like a child waiting for Christmas morning. God loves so much that He has promised redemption. The people have hope because they know of God’s love. God has made a covenant and will pardon all His people. God sends redemption through His son Jesus Christ which is for all. Jesus brings freedom and redemption, completely and forever.

It may be difficult for us to understand what it means to be captive and not have freedom. We think we live free. But if you have a habit or an addiction that you can’t push away, then you really are not free. If there is some behavior that you “enjoy” more and more to the point of not being able to stop doing it, you are not free. If you depend so strongly on your job for life that you put up with intimidation and difficulties you are not free. If you are in an abusive relationship staying only because you don’t think you could survive on you own, you are not free. To be free you need to trust someone other than yourself, someone who will give everything for you. This is Jesus. These words are easy to write, yet it is difficult to break out of what feels safe even if what you have is enslaving. Ask for help if you need. Ask for prayers.

Are you free? If you need help ask, Jesus followers should support one another.
