1 John 4:9 – December 21, 2018

In this way the love of God was revealed to us: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might have life through him. 1 John 4:9

In his first letter to the community he formed, John speaks of love. He calls us to love one another because love is from God and if we love we are from God and know God. God reveals love to us. By sending His only Son into the world we will have eternal life, and see God’s revelation of love. This act is filled with love, but also trust. God sends his Son as a baby who needs and depends on humans to even survive. This story of Jesus birth and growth mimics the life we all know. We are formed by our parents and grow to live the life we choose. Jesus of course chose to live a life that fulfills the will of His Father. Jesus would grow to teach us about love, in fact it is the love He taught that John writes so beautifully about. Jesus teaches forgiveness is more important than revenge, serving is more important than being served, it is greater to give than receive and in all things act with humility. The birth and life of Jesus changed the world. It changed how we see the world. This change began with a new way of thinking. Trusting God we know we don’t have to die, we can live a new life, thanks to love. If we love, we never end. Love came down and dwelled among us and by grabbing hold of this love we are immortal.

If you lost someone close through death you know it hurts. We miss them, and want them with us always. That is love. Our love aches to be with them and we hold onto their love for us. Without love death wouldn’t matter, we would live with those who remain and not miss those we have lost. Love is everything and the longer we hold it, the closer we are to the one we love. This is the message of Christmas, love came down to teach us love.

Who do you love? How can you love more?
