Psalm 100 is a five verse invitation to praise and serve God. It begins making a joyful noise for the LORD and then calling for service in the LORD with gladness as we enter His presence. We are invited to know the LORD. This psalm is a simple profession of faith. The quoted verse is a triple proclamation of the Lord’s power and love. God is good, merciful, and faithful for everyone born and living for all time. To be good is a challenge. We often think we are good and that we will achieve heavenly reward. But in fact we are all sinners. Good is not a word that applies to the sinner; all of us. When called a good teacher, Jesus responded, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.” (Luke 18:19) Good is a high bar that we don’t get over, but we try and we do have moments of goodness. The next description of God is mercy. God is just, which is important in judgement, if God is not just than how will we be judged fairly? After judgement and receiving a just judgement, God is able to apply mercy. Justice is giving you what you deserve, mercy is giving you what you do not deserve. Finally God is faithful, we can depend on God always, God never lets us down.
This view of God, good, mercy and faithful, glimpses the only being we know with the fullness of these three qualities. We should meditate on this thought. No one can be depended upon like God. We should also think about what it means to be good, merciful and faithful. If we can grow in these qualities we can become more like God, the one in whose image we have been created. The more like God we can become, the closer to God we can become.
