There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear because fear has to do with punishment, and so one who fears is not yet perfect in love. 1 John 4:18 NABRE
At the heart of John’s letter is a meditation on love; where love originated and how it must be expressed. It begins; “beloved let us love one another, because love is of God … anyone without love does not know God, for God is love.” John tells us we must love one another if we wish to see God, God is in the love between us. God sent His Spirit and with the help of the Spirit we have come to know and believe in the love God has for us. God’s love is made perfect in us. In other words the love God shows through Christ reaches “perfection”, it’s “culmination” or “completion” when we show the same love to each other. God made us in His image, which is love and we are to remain in God’s image by loving one another. This perfect love drives out fear, when we love as God, we need not be concerned with God’s judgement, there is no fear of a final judgement, perfect love eliminates this fear. If we do fear, if we are concerned with punishment from God then we have not attained perfect love. In this case our love is not mature, we need our love to grow, we must work to be more loving to one another. Always, perfect love knows the truth and has complete trust in God.
Life keeps us busy, we work to survive, even when we are at play we are distracted by worldly things. John’s message; make each other our priority. We can’t walk past someone ignoring them, we must reach out and make a connection, we must find an opportunity to love. If we don’t connect with those around us, then we don’t connect with God. As followers of Jesus this is not an option and it is the only way to see God.
