John 6:35 – September 25, 2018

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.” John 6:35 NABRE

Chapter six of the good news from John is rich in meaning. It opens with a feeding miracle and then Jesus walking on water. It flows into what is called the Bread of Life discourse, John’s teaching that Jesus is our bread of life. The people are looking for a sign and Jesus says their ancestors had a sign, the manna that came down from heaven. Jesus is referring to the people’s time in the dessert with Moses. When they were hungry God provided manna each morning. Jesus says true bread gives eternal life. Jesus is that bread. Manna only satisfied for a day, Jesus is true bread, bread that completes, bread that satisfies eternally. If we believe in Jesus, sent down from heaven, from the Father, we will never hunger, we will never thirst, we will be fulfilled. We yearn to be satisfied, we hunger and thirst, the message we hear is our yearning will only be satisfied through belief in Jesus. Belief is acceptance, Jesus becomes our daily partner, Jesus becomes our daily bread. We will chase all our life the things of the world; parties, partners; play things; pastimes, pleasures, nothing satisfies, in the end our heart yearns for true bread.

The bread we seek is attained through a life Jesus offers. An imitation of Jesus teaching will fulfill, accepting Jesus as one who leads us to God will fulfill, seeking the one who came down from heaven makes every day full, always pleased, never hungry, never thirsty. If you only think of Jesus on Sunday, this is an invitation to seek Jesus more often, every day, every moment.

Do you still yearn to be satisfied? Can you give more time and thought to Jesus each day?

Belief is acceptance, Jesus becomes our daily partner, Jesus becomes our daily bread. We will chase all our life the things of the world; parties, partners; play things; pastimes, pleasures, nothing satisfies, in the end our heart… Click To Tweet
