Psalms 16:8 – September 10, 2018

I keep the LORD always before me; with him at my right hand, I shall never be shaken. Psalms 16:8 NABRE

Psalm 16 is a song proclaimed by someone who puts their trust in God. It opens seeking security and safety from God by someone whose whole life is devoted to God. In Israel there are the faithful and there are those who worship idols, the psalmist trust in the one true God. God is his portion and cup which might indicate the palmist was a priest of the temple as this is the same thing that God spoke to Arron (Numbers 18:20). Arron was a priest told he would receive no inheritance or hold no land rather God was his inheritance. For the psalmist this is pleasing, his inheritance is a good heritage. The psalm begins asking for blessing and proclaims praise of the one true God. Those who devote themselves to God have a constant guide, a protector, God is their joy and well-being. The quoted verse declares God as the strong refuge, a strong right arm and the one who holds firm and doesn’t let go. The psalm closes addressing a kind of resurrection, the soul rejoices, the body is secure, there is no hell, only joy and pleasure for all eternity. It foreshadows the salvation of God through Jesus death and descending to hell retrieving those who died before the moment of the cross. God is the source for everything, including life after death. God alone is all we need.

By resurrecting Jesus leads the way for all before and after Him to know God eternally. Jesus predicted his death and resurrection, lived it and promised the same for his followers. Our faith tells us Jesus conquered death and we too will follow His path; eternal life with God who never lets us go, from whom we can never be shaken. Believe and trust in God, dedicating yourself to Him.

Is God everything for you? Does you path lead to resurrection? Contemplate life after life.
