Isaiah 26:4 – September 8, 2018

Trust in the LORD forever! For the LORD is an eternal Rock. Isaiah 26:4 NABRE

Isaiah is a major prophet and one most often referenced in the gospel stories; in fact Jesus quotes Isaiah more than any other prophet. The section of the readings which include the quoted verse are hymns of thanksgiving to God for choosing Jerusalem as His place of glory. The first of the two songs praises God saying those who put their trust in Him will never be disappointed and the second song returns to praising God for giving safety to the poor and needy. It includes the verse, “Trust in the LORD forever! For the LORD is an eternal Rock.” Putting our trust in the LORD is a firm belief He is one to trust, He is reliable, able, strong, and will take care of us. So it is a statement of faith and action. Faith can only be demonstrated through action. An example of faith in action; If you have faith God will help you get a new job, then buy a new suit for the job before you even hear. The other aspect of the verse is trusting God forever. It is timeless. While there is a beginning and an end to our earthly existence, trusting in God provides the path to eternity. Next we read the Lord is an eternal Rock. He is solid, a foundation, dependable, immovable. With God we are on solid ground, forever.

It is also striking that “rock” is the same word Jesus uses when speaking about his church, “upon this rock I will build my church” (Matthew 16:18.) It is the community of people joined with Jesus as head that is the foundation of faith. Trusting in the LORD our rock leads us to a church community where we can grow together. Our trust which includes faith, cannot become eternal in isolation, we need a community to strengthen us and aid us in avoiding temptation.

Do you belong to a church? Do you serve in your church? Can you find a church if you don’t have one?
