Proverbs 10:17 – August 10, 2018

Whoever follows instruction is in the path to life, but whoever disregards reproof goes astray. Proverbs 10:17 NABRE

The tenth chapter of Proverbs begins a long series of short sayings entitled “the proverbs of Solomon.” There is no logical order, they rarely have a connection in theme. Each proverb in this series consist of two phrases in parallel; the second phrase proposes the opposite of the first, or it repeats the same idea found in the first, but differently. The proverb quoted wants us to establish habits becoming a way of life. Following instructions means hearing them, internalizing them and using them to form habits. For example, Jesus’ command to love our neighbor, it is not enough to hear it, we must hear it, understand how to do it, make it a part of who we are and then do it, daily. The second phrase; we must hear criticism and learn from it. If someone in our life points to an area we might be off track we need to heed and learn. If we ignore admonition it is likely our life will go astray. Even Jesus, a leader, had to bend to the will of the Father, following in obedience. Jesus words constantly reminding, “not my will but yours be done” Father. Regardless of our intelligence or experience, we must be open and ready to grow. Receiving disapproval requires acceptance, learning and growth. Don’t ignore reproof.
